Program Overview
YADI implements Community-Based Disaster Risk Management as a people-centred and locally led approach to reducing disaster risks and strengthening resilience at the grassroots level.
The program works directly with communities to ensure disaster risk reduction is grounded in local knowledge, inclusive participation, and sustainable community ownership.
CBDRM System
The CBDRM model links participatory assessment, planning, youth mobilization, risk reduction, local structures, institutional linkages, and continuous learning.
Use community mapping, seasonal calendars, and hazard analysis to build a shared understanding of risk.
Develop community plans with clear roles, responsibilities, response actions, and coordination pathways.
Implement safer construction, environmental protection, land management, climate-smart livelihoods, and household preparedness.
Strengthen disaster committees, volunteer teams, leadership systems, local authority linkages, and learning loops.
Participatory Assessment
YADI engages leaders, women, youth, persons with disabilities, and other at-risk groups to identify hazards, exposure, capacities, and underlying vulnerabilities.
Identify hazard-prone areas, safe spaces, community assets, and local resources.
Track flood, drought, epidemic, livelihood, and other seasonal risk patterns.
Identify and categorize natural, climate-related, and human-induced hazards.
Understand who is most at risk, why they are exposed, and what capacities already exist.
Planning & Contingency
Develop plans around identified hazards, vulnerabilities, and priority concerns.
Assign clear responsibilities for warning, evacuation, response, and community support.
Prepare alternative response actions for different disaster scenarios.
Connect community plans to local government and national disaster frameworks.
Youth Change Agents
YADI trains youth to facilitate risk assessments, support data collection, lead community sensitization, and bridge elders, leaders, and young people in resilience-building processes.
Risk Reduction & Mitigation
YADI promotes low-cost, locally appropriate solutions that communities can maintain, while addressing environmental, livelihood, household, land-use, and infrastructure risks.
Promote building practices that reduce exposure to hazards and structural risk.
Reduce degradation that increases flooding, erosion, and other disaster risks.
Support safer, more sustainable land use and settlement planning.
Equip families with practical knowledge and actions for emergency response.
Community Structures
YADI helps build and reinforce disaster management committees, volunteer response teams, community leadership structures, and linkages to local authorities and response agencies.
Inclusion, Accountability & Learning
YADI prioritizes inclusion, gender sensitivity, accountability, knowledge management, lesson documentation, and peer-to-peer learning across CBDRM systems.
Impact Focus
Communities are better equipped to anticipate, prepare for, and respond to disasters.
Risk reduction measures lower exposure and address underlying drivers of disaster impact.
Community structures connect more effectively with local authorities and response agencies.
Local governance, learning, and ownership keep risk management active beyond project cycles.
Take Action
Partner with YADI, support community-based disaster risk management, or join work that helps local actors assess, plan, reduce, and sustain resilience.
